Sadly, this is in large part due to their ignorance of the size of the marketplace and the purchasing power this Community represents.

Some would suggest that there are about 6,000,000 people with disabilities in the UK. However, I believe that the count is actually quite more substantial.
The under-count is due to the fact that many people with disabilities are not tallied nor do they wish to be 'tagged' as having a disability.
Therefore, the expanded count of people with various learning disabilities and other transient disabilities (e.g. hip or knee replacement) go un-counted.
A revised estimate is probably much closer to something approaching 10,000,000.

Further, for every person with a disability, there are caregivers and family members, who augment the "total purchasing power"--and research has proven that these are EXTREMELY LOYAL customers. Businesses, which are supportive of them, receive their support in return.
A conservative estimate of this “extended halo of purchasing power” adds another
13,000,000 to the impact of this Community.

Finally, the demographics of this marketplace is growing and growing rapidly.
Between the ages of 55 to 69, 31% of those people, are or will become disabled. Over the age of 70, 58% of them are or will become disabled.
Given enormous demographic bubble created by an ageing Baby Boom Generation; the numbers will soon become enormous. Most businesses do not a clue and are apt to miss out on a huge commercial opportunity. Within the next 10 to 15 years, expect the ageing to add another 5,000,000 to the total number of people with disabilities.

How much purchasing power does this Community represent? Although I have a pretty good clue, I’d like to hear your thoughts. Please write to me and let me know.
